Use Lookout
Account and devices
Your Lookout account: signing up, signing in on a Mac, adding a device, the Recovery Key and the web dashboard.
Your Lookout account holds your profile, the usage your devices report, and the provider sign-ins your devices share. A device you add to it, a Mac or a server, gets those sign-ins without signing in to each provider again, along with your connectors and skills, your Everywhere memories and each repository's project memory.
Create an account
Accounts are by invitation.
- Open the invite link you were sent. It fills in the invite code. Without a link, click Create an account on the app's sign-in card, or I have an invite on the site's sign-in page, and type the Invite code.
- Enter your Email, a Username (3 to 32 characters: letters, numbers,
_and-) and a Password of at least 12 characters. - Click Create account.
Forgot your password? Click Forgot password? on the site's sign-in page, enter your email and click Send reset link.
Sign in on a Mac
The app's window shows Sign in to Lookout until this Mac is signed in.
- Click Continue with browser. A sign-in page opens in your browser, and the app shows Finish in your browser (Open it again reopens the page).
- Sign in with your email or username and your password. If the browser is already signed in, click Continue.
- The page shows Finish in Lookout. If your browser asks to open Lookout, allow it. Open Lookout on the page asks again.
- The app carries on by itself, and the page says You're signed in.
The first device on a new account then asks you to save your Recovery Key. Every later device is added by one you already have, or with your Recovery Key.
Add a Mac to your account
A Mac that signs in to an account that already has a device shows Add this Mac and a 6-digit code.
- On a device already on your account, a banner says the Mac wants to join your account. Click Review. The request is also listed in Settings › Devices under Asking to join.
- Type the code shown on the new Mac. Once it says Code checked, check the Name and click the Add button, which carries that name (such as Add MacBook Air).
- If it asks, confirm with Touch ID (when Touch ID for changes is on) or Your Lookout password. It asks at most every 10 minutes.
The new Mac carries on by itself. If the request isn't yours, click Not me, then Block, and change your password.
A server or another computer joins the same way, from a line you run on it: see Add a server.
Save your Recovery Key
With your password, the Recovery Key adds a new device when none of yours is at hand. Without it, losing every device means connecting your providers again.
The first device on your account shows Save your Recovery Key, with the key on one line. Lookout can't recover the key for you, so keep a copy:
- Click Save Recovery Kit for a PDF with the key and your account. Copy and Print sit at the end of the key. A copied key clears from the clipboard after a minute.
- Click Done once the key is kept, however you kept it.
Later asks once more, then skips it. While that device is your only one, Settings › Devices reminds you to save a key.
To replace the key, open Settings › Devices, click Make a new one under Recovery Key, and confirm. The old key
stops working. From a terminal, lookout recovery-key says when the key was set and lookout recovery-key rotate makes
a new one.
Add a Mac with your Recovery Key
- On the new Mac's Add this Mac card, click Use your Recovery Key instead.
- Type the Recovery Key. Looks right shows once it is typed correctly.
- Click Add this Mac, and enter Your Lookout password if it asks.
The next time you open Settings › Devices, it offers to remove the devices you no longer have (the ones not online
are checked), then to make a new Recovery Key in case someone saw the one you typed. From a terminal,
lookout login --recovery adds a computer with your Recovery Key.
Start over without a device or key
Without a device or your Recovery Key, your saved provider sign-ins can't be recovered. Starting over erases them, and the account's copy of your connectors and your Everywhere and project memories (each machine keeps its own and shares it again). Your account and usage stay, and you connect each provider again.
- On the Add this Mac card, click Use your Recovery Key instead, then Can't do either?.
- Click Email me the link, and enter your password if it asks.
- Open the link in the email and click Erase my providers. The Mac carries on by itself once you do.
The web dashboard offers the same: Devices, then Advanced, then Erase. The emailed link works for 24 hours.
Touch ID for changes
In Settings › Devices, under This Mac, turn on Use Touch ID for changes and enter your password once. Adding or removing a device, or making a new Recovery Key, then asks for Touch ID instead of your password.
Sign out or leave your account
| To | Do this | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Sign this Mac out | Settings › Account, Sign out on This device under Sessions, or Sign out in the account menu | Your providers leave this Mac until you sign in again. Chats and projects stay, and the Mac keeps its place on your account |
| Take this Mac off your account | Remove this Mac from your account, at the bottom of Settings › Devices | It forgets your providers. To use it again, add it from another device or with your Recovery Key |
| Remove another device | Its menu in Settings › Devices, then Remove | It's signed out at once. If it was lost or stolen, also sign out of your providers on their own websites |
| Sign out every other device | Settings › Account, Sign out everywhere else beside Sessions | Every other device signs out, and every app loses its access. Your machines stay signed in unless you turn on Sign my machines out too |
| Take a server off your account | lookout logout on the server | It leaves your account and signs out of the providers your account gave it |
Settings › Account also lists every signed-in session under Sessions, each with its own sign-out. The apps that drive Lookout are on Settings › App access, and on App access in the web dashboard (App access).
The web dashboard
Sign in on Lookout's site to open the dashboard.
| Section | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Overview | What needs you, the last 7 days of use, and your providers and devices at a glance. Before your first device signs in, the download and its first-launch steps |
| Providers | The providers your account holds, each one's accounts with their state as your devices last read it (Connected, Excluded, No active plan, Refused by the provider, Sign-in expired), and Sign out everywhere. Under Connectors, the connector accounts your devices linked, each with Sign out |
| Usage | What your plans have left and what your devices used, by provider and by model |
| Account | The same page as Settings › Account in the app: photo, username, email, Change password, Sessions and Delete account |
| Devices | The Macs and servers on your account: Rename, Remove, and start over under Advanced |
| App access | The apps that drive Lookout, with Revoke |
Your picture at the top right opens the account menu: who is signed in, the site's theme and motion, and Sign out. Download sits in the bar at the top of every page (in the account menu on a phone).
Connecting a provider happens in the app. Change password in Settings › Account asks for the current password, then the new one twice, and signs the web dashboard out everywhere. Your devices stay signed in and keep your providers.
Delete your account
- Open Settings › Account in the app, or Account on the web dashboard, and click Delete beside Delete account.
- Enter your password in the dialog and click Delete account.
This removes your profile, sessions, synced provider sign-ins and usage. There is no undo.
